Mainly based at the Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies of the Organization for Asian Studies, Waseda University, the Contemporary Chinese Area Studies is an organization that networks six joint research centers including the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University, Keio Institute of East Asian Studies, the Institute of Social Science at the University of Tokyo, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, and Toyo Bunko. It is a joint project with NIHU. Also starting from the second term, three partner centers are to be newly launched.
 Furthermore, the program uses “Interdisciplinary Research of Contemporary China: Understanding the Emerging Giant” as the common theme for joint research among all network centers, each carrying out its individual studies related to the theme.
