As China exerts stronger influence on its periphery and the entire world, its political entity, direction of development and entailing consequences upon the world are concerned with a great number of people. This makes the studies of contemporary China all the more significant.
As follows, Keio University has engaged in a variety of research and education activities in the area of Chinese politics and foreign relations: (1) International and cross-disciplinary joint research at Institute of East Asian Studies and Global Security Research Institute (G-SEC); (2) Research accumulation of contemporary Chinese studies at the Political Science Department of the Faculty of Law at Mita Campus; (3) The establishment of the Faculty of Policy Management as the first policy oriented faculty in Japan; (4) The opening of East Asian special units under the “Initiative for Attractive Education in Graduate Schools” facilitated many research and educational topics related with Chinese politics and foreign relations.
It was against this backdrop that the Center for Contemporary Chinese Studies was established in 2007 within the Keio Institute of East Asian Studies. The center is the only one that focuses on contemporary Chinese studies in the university and is recognized as such. As a superior organization, the Institute of East Asian Studies has been supporting our center activities. The establishment of our center also inspired the creation of the Center for Contemporary Korean Studies.
Based on our experiences gained in the first term, in the second term we would not only aim to sustain the center as a research institute, but also make it an international research network center for contemporary Chinese politics and foreign relations. To achieve this goal, we will further expand our research network across the border, continue publishing “Contemporary Chinese Studies Series” periodically, and fostering younger scholars able to identify new challenges and tackle them.
