As a global power, China is heading toward the road to become a “superpower”. During its first term, the center at Waseda took a multi-faceted approach including politics, economy, society and history under the theme of “China’s sustainable development”. In the second term, the center will directly face the studies of China in its way toward superpower. We will specifically take the following four perspectives to comprehensively approach the issue.
 (1) “Superpower” in international relations, (2) “Superpower” in a globalized economy,(3) “Superpower” and maturity of the society, (4) “Superpower” in the history of imperialism.
During the past decade, Waseda University has actively employed researchers in the area of contemporary Chinese studies, so that now it has excellent scholars in the discipline of political science, sociology and history. It further strengthened the team by inviting researchers from other Japanese universities as team members. The university has also conducted joint research and studies with overseas institutes (Chinese ones in particular), welcomed foreign scholars to our center for academic collaboration. As such, the fundamental conditions for our comprehensive research on the “superpower” China is already being laid out.
The Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies has already established its platform for basic activities as a research center. It will function not only as a leading network center that strengthens domestic networks, but also aims to be known as a window to share Japan’s contemporary Chinese studies with overseas scholars.
Furthermore, the Institute has launched an unprecedented project starting from 2012: the publication of Journal of Contemporary China Studies – the first academic English journal on China Studies in Japan.
